Apple is now getting really serious to curb iPhone addiction among children
Apple was recently slammed by two of its two big investors over smartphone addiction in children and that company should take steps to give parents a better control over how their kids should use Apple products. The Cupertino-giant has finally responded to these concerns by launching a new 'Families' page on its official website.
Apple's Families page educates parents over better parental controls for kids in Apple products. The page basically lists all the steps that Apple has taken since year 2008 to check use of iOS devices amongst kids.
The page informs about the already available options for better controls and offers no new feature. " You know your kids better than anyone. That's why we've put a lot of thought into helping parents choose what their kids can do with their devices" the page reads.
Here are some of the top features that Apple offers to help parents know when and how to control iOS usage among kids:
1. App Store: A safe place for kids
Apple claims that its kids section in the app store has been carefully created keeping children users in mind. Parents can add an age restriction in the app store so that their children can download or access only age-appropriate content.
2. Approve or decline app purchases from your phone
Parents can prevent kids from installing new apps or even turn off the Safari web browser. Apple offers an Ask to Buy feature for parents that allows parents to , approve or decline their kid's app purchases and downloads right from their device.
To enable Ask to buy, go to Settings > [your name] and tap Family Sharing. If you're using iOS 10.2 or earlier, go to Settings > iCloud and tap Family>Tap your family member's name>Tap Ask to Buy
3. Limit adult content
Apple offers option to limit adult content or open only websites that parents select on their kids' devices. Parents can also install special web browsers that display kid-friendly content only.
4. Find My Friends to track location of kids
Find My Friends feature in Apple devices lets parents keep a track of their kids' locations, get alerts when they leave or arrive somewhere, and see distances and travel times to where they are.
5. Find My iPhone for lost devices
Just like in Android, this feature lets you track your lost iOS device. The feature makes the lost device play a sound even if it's in silent mode. It also allows you to remotely erase all your data in case your phone has been stolen.
