YouTube is testing an Instagram Stories-like feature called Reels

After Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, YouTube is now planning to roll out a Stories-like feature called Reels. The launch of Reels Beta was made on YouTube in its blog post titled as 'Expanding community on YouTube'. The company says that Reels is a spin on Stories format but designed specifically for Creators.
"Reels are YouTube's spin on the popular "stories" format, but designed specifically for YouTube creators. We learned that you want the flexibility to create multiple Reels and have them not expire, so we'll give you those options," notes the blog post. Currently, Reels is being tested in a small group of the creators and the company hasn't revealed any date for its final roll out.

YouTube calls Reels as a spin on Stories but the feature differs from the latter in many ways. First, Reels won't be a time-limit feature. This means that the Reels won't disappear after 24 hours or any fixed amount of time as seen in Instagram or Facebook Stories. Second, user can separate individual Reels unlike Instagram or Facebook where the posts are bunched together.
TechCrunch explains that YouTube Reels is a new video platform through which  creators can upload create small video clips instead of long video clips. The videos can be of up to 30 seconds each. Creators can add music, filters and stickers to it. Reels will appear in a separate tab so creators always have an option to ignore them if they want to. However, YouTube may start pushing Reels in your main tab if its detects user viewing Reels more often. This is somewhat similar to how YouTube fetches videos that you more often watch and shows it on the homepage. YouTube Reels was first spotted in May 2017 but no details were revealed then.
