Karoq Impresses In Euro NCAP Crash Tests
The India-bound Skoda
Karoq has impressed with its safety features by scoring 5-stars in the recent
European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP). The SUV scored 93 percent in
adult occupant protection, 79 percent in child occupant protection, 73 percent
in pedestrian protection, while the efficiency of its safety assist system
scored 58 percent.
The Euro NCAP crash
tests also revealed that the Karoq offers excellent protection to the cervical
spine in terms of rear-end collision. The Czech car maker revealed the Karoq in
May 2017 and is being evaluated for a launch in India.
"We are
delighted that the new Skoda Karoq has also passed the Euro NCAP tests with
flying colours," says Skoda Board Member for Technical Development,
Christian Strube. "We are constantly working on optimising the passive and
active safety of our models and developing occupant and pedestrian protection, as
well as assistance systems. Numerous driver assistance systems are installed in
the Karoq that would otherwise only be found in higher vehicle classes,"
says Strube.
The Skoda Karoq comes
equipped with a host of safety features including seven airbags, Isofix mounts
for child seat at the front and rear, specially designed front seat headrests
that decrease whiplash and a proactive occupant protection system that tightens
the front seatbelts in case of a crash and closes any open windows including
the sunroof.
The SUV also offers
driver assistance systems; the Karoq comes with cameras as well as radar and
sensor-based systems from the front radar assistant, which includes city
emergency braking to a lane-keeping system and camera-based traffic sign
recognition system.
India launch of the
Skoda Karoq is expected sometime in 2018; however, there is no official
confirmation from Skoda. When launched the Skoda Karoq will be positioned below
the company's flagship Kodiaq SUV.
For the global
market, the Skoda Karoq is offered with two petrol engines and three diesel
units. The petrol models includes a 113bhp, 1.0-litre TSI three-cylinder engine
and a 148bhp, 1.5-litre TSI unit with cylinder deactivation technology.
As for the diesel
options, a new 113bhp, 1.6-litre engine, the 148bhp, 2.0-litre oil burner from
the Kodiaq, and a range-topping 187bhp, 2.0-litre engine. The range-topping
engine comes paired with a 7-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox as standard,
while the remaining units come mated to 6-speed manual gearbox. The Skoda Karoq
is a 5-seater SUV and will rival the likes of Jeep Compass, Hyundai Tucson, and
the Volkswagen Tiguan.
