New Indian envoy to China presents credentials to Xi Jinping
India's new envoy to China Gautam Bambawale had a brief conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping after presenting his credentials.
India's new envoy to China Gautam Bambawale met Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday and formally presented his credentials as he begins a key diplomatic assignment.
Bambawale, who arrived in China on November 19, met Xi as is the practice for newly arriving envoys. He had a brief conversation with Xi after presenting his credentials.
A former envoy to Pakistan and Bhutan, the 1984-batch Indian Foreign Service officer is a Mandarin-speaker who previously headed the Ministry of External Affairs East Asia Desk which includes China, and has also earlier served in Beijing and in Guangzhou as the Consul General.
He takes over at a key time in the relationship, when both sides have been looking to turn the page after the Doklam standoff which ended on August 28. China's foreign minister Wang Yi will travel to India for the December 11 Russia-India-China FM's meet while the special representative Yang Jiechi will also travel to India this month for the next round of border talks.
On Tuesday, officials from NITI Aayog including Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar and China's Development Research Center, an official think-tank under the State Council, began the third annual inter-ministerial dialogue in Beijing, aimed at coordinating both countries' development strategies as well as response to global concerns such as rising protectionism.
